Singapore Airlines A380 themed Birthday Cake

This year ( 2018 ) , I turned 18, and this year’s birthday is probably the best Birthday in my life.  With getting birthday surprises from cabin crews of Singapore Airlines and Garuda Indonesia,

And coming home to an A380 Singapore Airlines themed BirthdayCake. A380 is one of my favorite aircraft because until now it is still the biggest passenger plane in the world. Next, it is two storey high, and the amount of space inside the aircraft gives airlines the freedom to design the cabins with innovative products. And look at the wingtip, it used to be the only aircraft with that kind of wingtip, but now since Boeing released their 737 Max, these are the two aircrafts with these kind of wingtips. And ofcourse, Ive always wanted a Singapore Airlines birthday cake, because it is my favorite airline in the world.

All of my family member’s birthday cakes are beautifully made by Le Soho Cupcakes ( Instagram : @LeSohoCupcakes )

This year’s A380 cake is made by Le Soho Cupcakes too. I requested SQ and A380, only that 2 factors matters to me, I trust the rest to them.

Taadaa! My Singapore Airlines A380 themed Birthday Cake. Let me list down the features of this cake :

  1. The A380 is legit! 2 storey, with 2 sets of windows ( 1st and 2nd floor ) , 4 engines, the wings, the SQ Logo
  2. Singapore Airlines cabin crew uniform patterms ( in blue ) on the sides of the cake base.
  3. Indonesian passport with the same thickness in real life
  4. SQ Krisflyer card, with my name, birth date printed ;)
  5. The Burberry teddy bear keychain I always bring with me whenever I travel.
  6. Singapore and Hongkong flag. Well, SG and HK is the 2 most frequent routes I take :) I fly to Hongkong via Singapore once a month.

Kudos to Le Soho cupcakes for this beautifully crafted cake with intricate details, I bet it takes a whole lot of social media stalking :p

Happy me with my SQ A380 themed Birthday Cake :) Came home to this cake from my Garuda Indonesia flight from Bali.

My best friend made another SQ Birthday cake for me, check her bakery Instagram @Lesucredupatisserie

I got the chance to celebrate my birthday again with my students at my Rumah Belajar, along with students whose birthday falls in June as well :) What a blessed Birthday.

Singapore Airlines SilverKris Lounge ( Singapore ) Terminal 3

The lounge is huge, but not big enough to accomodate so many business class passengers, especially the ones on transit for long haul flights. So the lounge, most of the time is packed, you really have to go through every side of the lounge to grab a seat. It depends on the times of the day. Especially at night, many passengers are waiting at the lounge for their long haul

Everything is self-service, maybe unless the liquors , you have to ask the lounge staff.

I love the TWG Tea selection. There were 2 TWG Tea corners with their gigantic tins and a variety of choices. SQ also serves TWG tea onboard on Business & First class , I think they are the first in the world to serve TWG, since its first launch.

What I love about SQ's SilverKris Lounges around the world is the fact that they use the same tablewares ( plates, bowls ) with the signature silver lining. (:

The food options is great considering it is an airport lounge, not a hotel buffet. There are several cuisines, Chinese, Singaporean, Indian and many others. I think they also have a special made to order kid's menu ( by request )

There's a small salad bar, cheese station, light bites and desserts.

Time for salad ;)

The restroom is super clean and huge, with many amenities provided for instance mouth wash, and others which I totally forgot ( my bad )

They also provide clothes straightener machine, which was cool, and was usually used for coats / jackets.

Mom and I 😊

For the magazine selections, theres lots, and also not to forget, they display their onboard magazine as well ;)

There’s always room for desserts! 😊

As the World's best Airline 2018, and the fact that SQ is their homebase, I expect SKL to be bigger and better. Hopefully, they'll upgrade soon.

SQ also have a SilverKris Lounge in Terminal 2. Most passengers prefer SKL T3 than T2. But I personally love the T2 one more because its much smaller, less packed which somehow makes it a little more 'exclusive' than SKL T3.
If im not mistaken, SilkAir business class passengers can also enter SKL T2, correct me if im wrong. And most people also said that people in SKL T2 are mostly biz class passengers flying short haul SQ flights ;)

SQ's Gold lounge is exclusive to their Gold members ( they can relax and rewind at this lounge when theyre flying Economy )

And The Private Room in Terminal 3 is exclusive to their First Class passengers. Not even their PPS members can enter this specific lounge. Its that exclusive ;)

Singapore Airlines SilverKris Lounge ( HongKong )

We were greeted by the friendly lounge staff. The lounge is located near the gates 16-18 ( SQ's usual lounge ) with 7 daily flights to and from Hongkong ) excluding SQ's cargo plane !

It was one of SQ's prime and profitable routes. SQ's san fransisco flight connects to and from Hongkong with daily flight SQ01 and SQ02 ( HKG-SFO ) ( SFO-HKG ) respectively.

Its a morning flight, we arrived at around 6 am, before entering the seating and food spread area, there were corridors, between that was the restrooms, clean, huge and well-designed. Modern & minimalistic.

There was a bar after the corridor and before the seating area. All the lounge staffs were friendly, you can hear 'good mornings' everywhere. I love SQ’s consistency in service, whether in ground or onboard. Kudos to their HRD team 

The lounge was quiet, calm and peaceful. Which makes it exclusive, although its not a big space. The choice of food is great, considering Hongkong is not their homebase. And I appreciate enough the fact that it is not a shared lounge. ( Unlike SkyTeam's lounge in HKIA - nothing special )

The choice of food were mostly chinese cuisine, acceptable cause mostly their passengers must be mostly asians on this route. The lounge staff greeted me and asked whether I wanted to try their Hongkong milk tea, she spoke to me in perfect chinese.

As what I can remember, There's a small salad bar and light bites ( which are DimSums ).

And cute, just like what Ive mentioned on my SKL Singapore Review, they used the signature silver lining table wares in SKL Hongkong.

I love the ambience of this lounge. Weird but I love SKL Hongkong more than SKL Singapore ( their hub & homebase ).
Dimsum to start my morning, so Chinese hahahhaha.

brekkie usuals, omelette, sausage, more dimsum ;) , chinese style rice vermicelli…
SQ’s signature lounge sofas, I love the pattern and unique shape. I think other SKL’s around the world

has quite similar features. Like the sofas, work stations, tableware and cutleries. Consistency or branding, I don’t know, hahahaha.but definitely a plus point.

Garuda Indonesia Business Class Lounge ( Domestic - Jakarta, Indonesia )

Airport code : CGK
Airline : Garuda Indonesia
Terminal : 3 Ultimate

At the time of this short lounge review, I was flying with a morning flight. I arrived at the airport at around 5 am. And the lounge was packed. It was difficult to find a seat for 4. The lounge is noisy. frequent flyers knew how difficult it is to find a seat at Ga’s domestic lounge during peak hours 🤪

For me, the space of the lounge is quite small. For the fact that Garuda Indonesia operates flights to all cities / provinces around Indonesia, and the increase of business class passengers. Plus, it is the homebase, government owned, Should give them more power, authority and right for more space eh?

Who can enter this lounge? Business class passengers & ( If I’m not mistaken ) BNI Emerald cardholders. Do note you cannot use Garuda Citibank CC to enter this lounge.( perks of having this CC is extra baggage allowance of 20kg and other perks check their website for more info )

I think that it should be more private as it is not a shared or joint lounge like owned by an alliance and used by all its member’s passengers. But then again, I think the space is quite small.

For the design of the lounge itself, just decent, nothing spectacular but not bad either :) we all know what to expect from airport lounges, except First class lounge teehee

There’s leather sofa too. And one thing I observe from Garuda is that they sell onboard duty free products on the ground at their lounge as well. So their staff go around the lounge and pushing a cart with many duty free products. Perhaps to increase duty free revenue? Anyways i think its a nice act as long as theyre not pushy and not block the way, ofcourse.

Regarding the lounge food, for me its decent. Not much variety, but they do have live egg station, Indonesian option, and salad station.

I do apologize I didnt take any photos of the food options. I will update this article again next time I fly with GA.

Esplanade Lounge Jakarta Terminal 2 ( SQ )

Just when I finished writing this article, I got news that Singapore Airlines will be moving from terminal 2 to Terminal 3 ultimate ( a less passenger-friendly terminal to me – because of the long walks and lack of signposts ) Singapore Airlines business and first class passengers might use Garuda Indonesia’s executive lounge or the Sapphire lounge ( part of Plaza Premium Lounge ). I will really miss esplanade lounge, because to me it is probably the best or more decent lounge here in Jakarta 

Before entering the lounge, we pass through a corridor with glass sidelines and flowers on display. It's lovely :) the corridor somehow gives it an exclusive feeling.

I love the interior of the lounge. Its far from spectacular, but its cozy enough. At least better than GA's lounge. Also, though the selection of food is not much, all of the food served tastes good. Like whats the use of putting so much choices but all the food tastes horrible.

The next good thing is the service, the lounge staff was attentive, friendly and helpful. They were all smiles.

Once we arrive at the lounge, the lounge staff quickly greeted us and asked us what we'd like to drink. Then they came with a cup of tea ( our choice ).

The choice of reading materials is exceptional. A variety of magazine from different categories and fields were on display in a long shelf.

Also, I like how the passengers on the lounge are so chill and really only mind their business ( this is not the case in some other lounges, hahaha )

The restroom is just okay but clean enough, clean is an important factor which I really appreciate.

Perks of being a biz or first class passenger of SQ is the fact that there is a dedicated immigration, the staff will help you with your passport and escort you to the lounge. The immigration area is just right on the left side of the check in counter, just few walks away. In contrast, for Economy class passengers, its quite a looong walk to the regular immigration area lol.

Anyways, I don’t know if this dedicated immigration lane will still be available when they move to terminal 3, because Garuda’s business  class passengers get to do immigration in a priority lane, but you still have to queue for it, its just in a less crowded lane. Whereas SQ’s dedicated immigration is that you can just hand your passport to the staff and go straight to the lounge, the staff will arrange and look for you at the lounge once it is stamped already. And mind you, garuda Indonesia is based In Jakarta, government owned as well  think about the power, right and authority they have in this capital city.

But I do think SQ will do everything they can to continue giving their premium class passengers those perks.

I think Esplanade Lounge offers more variety of reading materials ( both national and international ) than Garuda’s lounge.

Selfie with Mom ;)

You can see on the right side, is the shelf containing reading materials, and this is not the only shelf 

Depends on the time of the day and the load of the flight, but Esplanade lounge is, as I can say, one of the most peaceful lounge here in Jakarta.

Birthday Surprise onboard Singapore Airlines

Date : 6 July 2018
Aircraft : B777-200
Flight Number : SQ 868
Route : Singapore (SIN) - Hongkong (HKG)
Cabin class : Business Class

First off, I didn’t request any birthday cake as my birthday pass a week ago ( And I think I had enough birthday surprises & celebrations from my family, students and Garuda ). Plus, you cannot request a birthday cake if it passed 6 days lol, can you imagine how many cakes SQ should supply if every passengers can asked for a cake even 6 days before or after their birthday???

You can request for a birthday cake when you’re flying a day after, during or a day before your birthday, when flying Singapore Airlines, whatever your class of travel ( yes, even in Economy )

So it all started when I was chatting with Ms Kim ( the loveliest cabin crew ive ever met - shes the Inflight Manager ) she had such amazing personality, so lovable, so sincere ( like you can really differentiate who really want to talk to you, or ‘have’ to talk with you, and if you’re an Indonesian reading this, you know you can really differentiate basa basi and non- basa basi hahahaha )
I adored how passionate she is, and what a great leader she was. All the cabin crews on all 2 flights with her as the IFM , from my experience was simply out of the world :)

I shared with Ms Kim, that Im a huge fan of Singapore Airlines and flew with SQ monthly for my work trips to Hongkong. Then I showed her my recent 18th Birthday Cake, an SQ A380 themed cake ( which I will cover in a special article on this blog )

She immediately asked why I didnt request a birthday cake to celebrate onboard SQ, and I replied the same reason I wrote in the beginning of this article.

She also mentioned about the SQ teddy bears, she asked me which bear I havent got, I told her I had the blue, the red, the 70th anniversary special, but not the Dreamliner!! ( havent got the chance to fly them because my routine routes are not operated with a DreamLiner - and due to many work commitments both business and social works and as a student, I cannot fly that often, or even fly without a purpose if you know what I mean, well I hope I can fly more often hahaha )

She felt bad theres no SQ teddy bears on that flight, well I guess its due to the sudden aircraft change (?) anyways its not a big deal, i have like 8-9 of them at home. I just love collecting teddy bears of the world’s best airline, aka my favorite airline :-)

Ms Kim then took note of the dreamliner teddy bears which I didnt have, and asked about the flight number of my next flight ( which is the HKG-SIN sector )
She really wrote on the her palm.
And she said she will arrange a birthday cake and dreamliner teddy bears on my next flight.
I was so touched by her kind gesture. She showed that she cares. And that she wanted to give me the very best.

30 minutes before landing, Gladys came to me and weirdly said 'Hi' clearly, loudly, cheerfully. I was so confused at first.
Seconds after that, 'the whole squad' Ms Kim, Kenny, Sulaiman joined in with a tray....

The tray consists of magnum icecreams decorated with pralines ( like hey so much effort they took the icecreams from Economy class then back to the biz class galley to set it up ) , they also wrote me handwritten cards, birthday greetings and postcards. If you look closely, Sulaiman even wrote #AvGeek and the aircraft registration number!! So extra , right :)

At that point, I was speechless. Not to mention, they also hole punched the menu book to decorate the tray, clover leave shapes...

And also took whatever merchandise or children toys they could get to colour my 'birthday tray'.....

I cannot ask for more, I was so surprised.

Anyways, Ms Kim gave me her namecard and jot down my house address in Jakarta, She said if I cant get these dreamliners teddies on my next flight, she’ll deliver it to my house.

We landed around midnight 12pm, I wasn’t sleepy or tired at all. I was too happy :)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Date : 8 July 2018
Aircraft : B777-200
Flight Number : SQ 857
Route : Hongkong (HKG) - Singapore (SIN)

It was a morning flight, I was quite sleepy but looking forward for my flight. Honestly speaking, deep down, I really hoped SQ won’t let me down. I mean the teddies and cakes promised, I was wondering will it be there? Or will it not be there. But again, on the other side, I believe that SQ will not let me down.

Fast forward, after the meal service, Ms Kim came, presenting me a tray with a Birthday Cake, SQ birthday card and a pair of Dreamliner teddies. As promised ;) and 3 citrus juice / drink ( I forgot the name, it was on the beverage list on the menu book )

Then again, we took pictures together :) Happy me. I feel so blessed again and again.

Big thank you to all the crews onboard SQ868 and SQ857 for making my birthday extra special. The care, love and initiative of the crews touched the deepest part of my heart. It will be a great memory I’ll forever keep in my heart.

To IFM Ms Kim, Gladys, Kenny, Raymond & Sulaiman, thank you for everything. I hope our paths cross again, and wish all of you happiness and blessings forever and always :)

You’re all the true definition and example of impeccable hospitality. Simply Unbeatable.

Cookies the crew bought for me during their stay in Hongkong, I really appreciate it!!

Birthday Surprise onboard Garuda Indonesia

Date : 30 June 2018
Aircraft : A330-200
Flight Number : GA 402
Route : Jakarta (CGK) - Denpasar (DPS)
Cabin class : Business Class

It was 30 June 2018, right on my birthday I have to fly to Bali for a close friend's wedding. Since it was my birthday, My Dad who doesnt usually fly with much often ( due to work commitments) flies with us to ensure he's there during my birthday. My Dad is a family man and our family philosophy is that family's first.

It was a morning flight and we were worried that our flight might be cancelled due to the volcanic ash of one of the mountains ( some flights before were cancelled or delayed for days ) . We had city check in the day before to print our boarding pass to confirm that we'll be flying the next day.

I was sure expecting a very full load on this flight because Of the previous delays and flight cancellations. I expect nothing on this flight, even in Biz class.

Fast forward to the flight, around 15 minutes after my meal service, 6 crews came front the front galley singing happy birthday to me. Bringing a tray, with a 3 cupcakes in a cake , a birthday greetings card and a glass of orange juice( Kak Adel, one of the FA remembered that my fav drink was orange juice ).

So literally half of the jumbo jet A330’s crew is celebrating my birthday, on a full load. Ultra short haul flight from Jakarta to Bali. Thats incredible.

Turns out my Mom and Sister arranged the surprise, they managed to bring cupcakes without me knowing anything and told one of the FA’s (before take off) to help hand in these cupcakes & writing birthday greetings for me because Im an #AvGeek and it would mean the world for me.

And yes they really made my birthday extra special. It was a great birthday surprise. I was speechless and felt so blessed when the crews were cheering and singing happy birthday to me and literally all smiles, theyre very happy to see me happy.

I really appreciate every single thing they do. Even if Mom and Sis brought the cupcakes themselves, ofcourse kak Adel ( the FA whom Mom and Sis spoke to for the surprise ) made an extra effort to really asked for every crews serving the biz class to write birthday greetings for me. Whats even more is the captain of the flight even wrote for me and also wrote ‘God bless you’ im deeply touched.

Do note once again it is a very short flight, the crews should be rushing everything. But things are very calm on this specific flight and the service was beyond amazing. This is the kind of service that makes Garuda deserve World’s best cabin crews. I wish more FAs are like kak Adel, very sincere, has high initiative and would go up and beyond.

Group photo – with all the crews serving the J class cabin. Kak Adel is in green uniform second from the left.

When we’re on our way from the airport to our hotel, Mom and Sis told me that at first they’re worried because kak Adel told them that there are no spare plates in the aircraft because all the meals are pre-prepaid so they just reheat them. But you see at last they use the plate for cups, thats completely fine at least they figure something out. And what amazes me is the fact that Kak Adel literally brought other cabin crews like 5 of them to celebrate my birthday. Like on that specific 10 minutes, can you imagine the 6 biz class crews for 2 biz class cabins was there to celebrate my birthday, they dont think whether the singing would bother ( with the singing and all )all passenger ( and see, other passengers were curious and see whats going on and was smiling because they adored the crew’s work ! ) the crew went all out to make my birthday so special, they came to me one by one to personally wish me a very happy birthday.

If you’re curious about the surprise moment, you can watch the video on my youtube channel : Elena Bensawan or check my Personal Instagram account’s ‘18’ highlight :)

Conclusion:
I cant thank all the cabin crews and pilots enough for simply everything. The service was amazing for this specific flight and with the birthday surprise, it really made this flight simply my best Garuda flight.

Kak Adel ( one of the FAs ) was amazing. I will definetely highlight her during my guest speaker session at Garuda’s uplifting class at Garuda Indonesia Training Centre in the near future.
And on this article, I’d like to also mention about Kak Maranatha, my close friend who works in Garuda as cabin crew, she got amazing personality and GA is definetely so lucky to have her. One day, if you’re reading this, kak Maranatha, please know that Im so blessed to know you. And Everytime I fly GA, I always hope I could bumped into you on the flight. I really do.

Thought I can honestly say Garuda’s service is inconsistent. Like fair enough, I understand that there is never a perfect flight or a perfect service. And that no one is perfect. Cabin crews are just humans. They have a tough job in not only serving passengers, but to also ensure passengers’ safety. While having to look neat and professional at all times. I always appreciate them, always. And whenever I get bad service, I always remind myself, that life is never perfect as well, some days are great, but other days may be harder to get through. They can also have bad days, its very human. Whatever it is, as a passenger, respect and appreciate them whenever and whatever. Like the saying, respect others so others will respect you.

Anyways, though as mentioned I said its inconsistent, some of the crews and some flights are simply amazing. So keep it up Garuda :) show the world that you have world’s best cabin crews and soar higher than ever.

Date : 1 July 2018
Aircraft : A330-200
Flight Number : GA 425
Route : Denpasar (DPS) - Jakarta (CGK)
Cabin class : Business Class

The next day after my birthday, I had to fly back to Jakarta because I had morning class on Monday Morning #StudentLife

GA425 is a night flight and is operated by an A330 ( ofcourse I always choose twin aisle planes whenever I can ;) )

After the meal service, I spoke with a cabin crew that I just had my birthday yesterday, and as #AviationGeek , it would mean a lot to me if I could get birthday greetings from all of the crews onboard.

( Mom is amazing, shes knows me best. She prepared 2 birthday cards for me, 1 during the surprise on the CGK-DPS sector and one for the return flight ( cause she said she need to do back up incase the FAs of the CGK-DPS flight is uncooperative lol, - as usual Moms always have plan A B Cs )
Ofcourse she said yes! ( I kept the other empty greeting card with me as, me and my sister is taking a flight later than Mom & Dad due to full load on the A330 and I want to fly on the A330 im so sorry - we have to fly seperately ) im not being so picky but then knowing that you can get something better with the price that you pay, who wouldnt resist? :)

Back to the birthday vibes, the FA came to me with the greeting card filled with wishes from the crews! :)

Then whats more, she then came with another FA and sang a short happy birthday while clapping their hands, personally say it to me, then asked me to look at the IFE screen. Guess what, I saw my name. They made a personalized message for me, for my seat. The screen says ‘ happy birthday E L E N A , wish u all the best :) ‘

How extra can it be?? Can I ask for more??

Weeks after my birthday, I met Kak Yora, a friend who was working as an A330 FO in GA, she said she just knew having those personalised messages on passengers’ IFE’s is possible. Wow.

Our flight lands just 20 minutes later than my Parents’ , they waited for us at the arrival gate. And on our way back home, Mom kept on sharing her experience on her B737 , she said the Pursor was sooo attentive and even addressed Mom & Dad with their names ( a very light load only 4/8 ) but the seats are dirty and the recline is so limited lollll, and I reminded her, hey Mom Garuda just recently threw me a surprise, just see the good in them hahaha ( well I was joking, because we had same feeling towards Garuda lol )
